Police in Sharjah have charged a couple with neglect for leaving their child in an unattended car which was then stolen, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Friday.

The parents became the centre of a seven-hour 'baby snatch drama' after their car was stolen, baby in tow, from a petrol station in Sharjah's Industrial Area 6 earlier this month.

The couple's baby daughter was in the backseat of the car, which was still running and unlocked, when it a thief jumped in and sped away.

Police issued an alert through social networks asking the public to help, which prompted an Emirati good samaritan to go hunting for the stolen baby.

The child was reunited with her parents soon after.

The baby's father described his horror at the incident, saying: “We spent those seven hours praying and asking God to return our daughter safely.

The couple have been referred to public prosecution and a judge is set to issue a date for their hearing. Gulf News says.
