.Dar launches an online campaign intends to empower women farmers

GROW and Oxfam an international non governmental organization have team up to push government, private sector and individual to invest in small scale farmers through an online campaign “Wekeza kwa Wakulima Wadogo Wanawake Inalipa” which intends to empower women in agriculture activities across the country.
Speaking to reporters in a news conference in Dar es Salaam, Grow Ambassador Shamim Mwasha said that the urban invest in rural women is an online campaign intends to expand the debate beyond NGOs and government space, bringing in urban consumers, elite, and dwellers as part of the solution.
She said that the campaign will also connect consumers and women farmers, in its own, women will bring in to perspective the concept of active citizenship, challenging urban middle class and elite to reinvest their income to their relatives.
“Various campaign quotes ad slogans such as “Don’t give her Khanga, Give her Land and Wekeza Kwa Wakulima Wadogo Wanawake Inalipa…. Will be used,” she said.
Mwasha added that this will bring in evidence to the kind of investment that women producers needs, the stories shared will be used as powerful tool for the overall grow campaign in amplifying women voices and stories to reinforce the need for small scale agriculture investment.
She further said that other objective of the campaign is to engage urban citizen as active players and powerful consumers to lobby for small scale women farmers investment.
Mwasha underscored that urban invest in rural women is the online campaign in the form of the social media competition which will be hosted by her who owns 8020 fashion blog and run by other popular blogs in the country.
Furthermore, Oxfam has long history of working with celebrities across the world with sole aim of scaling campaigns agenda and pushing for substantial and sustainable change.
With rapid population growth, and increase global urban-rural migration, Tanzania is also not spared as it enjoys both hasty urban growth as well as migration thus affecting the stability of agriculture sector.
