World Economic Forum on Africa opens in Dar es Salaam

A brainstorming session on “Turning Vision into Reality” was billed to kick-start the meeting by examining the current, changing global landscape and identify opportunities that can unlock Africa’s growth potential and the barriers to social and economic progress in the coming year.

Later, the Forum participants - who include business executives, academics, diplomats and representatives of various UN agencies - will discuss higher education for Africa.as a critical issue to economic development and Africa’s future competitiveness.

According to the Forum organisers, while certain barriers remain a reality including a 6 percent enrolment rate, 40 percent unfilled faculty positions and complexities related to professional brain drain, certain programmes and innovative partnerships are proving both successful and scaleable.

The global economic crisis, analysts say, has led to the need for reassessment of the systems governing global cooperation, financial architecture and macroeconomic policies.

Against this background, the Forum’s African community must find answers, on the one hand, to such questions as: What are the regional implications of the global adjustments, and how can Africa’s economies contribute to global growth in the next decade?

On the other hand, the African community must identify key drivers of the continent’s competitiveness in the long run; and how government and business use the crisis as an opportunity to redesign a sustainable roadmap to Africa’s future growth.

African leaders who are already on ground for the Forum were Presidents Armando Guebuza of Mozambique, Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Others were Vice Presidents Yyve Sabinguvu of Burundi and Rupia Banda of Malawi as well as UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro.
