The fifth Forum on Chinese-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) concluded yesterday with generous promises from the Chinese President Hu Jintao, and an in-depth plan for China’s future in Africa. According to the New York Times, Hu stated that China would be giving $20 billion in aid to African countries.
Tunisia was represented at FOCAC by the State Secretary to the Maghreb, African, and Arab Affairs, Abdallah Triki. In a statement released to TAP, Triki said that, “the forum has considerably contributed to broadening the scope of exchanges between Chinese and African countries, specifically in the fields of economy, trade, and culture.”
Triki attended the conference along with over 50 African leaders, reported TAP. It was during the opening ceremonies on Thursday that Hu announced that $20 billion would be allocated to Africa to aid with infrastructure and agriculture, reported the Global Times.
According to the Global Times, the conference was the fifth of its kind and represents a important increase for China’s involvement in Africa, as the amount of aid offered has doubled since the last conference was held. However, according to the same report those loans have come under criticism for lack of regulation which may have resulted in corrupt spending in Sudan.
In his interview with TAP Triki confirmed that FOCAC resulted in a comprehensive plan, entitled “The Beijing Agreement” on the future of China’s involvement in Africa between 2012-2015. A major focus of the project is to improve cooperation between China and Africa in the international affairs, political security, economy, development and the exchange of cultural resources sectors.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was unavailable to comment on Tunisia’s participation in FOCAC and what percentage of the $20 billion loan will be allocated to Tunisia.
