THE Dawati ni Elimu campaign has raised nearly Tsh 4.98billion to curb a shortage of desks to Primary and Secondary schools in Ilala municipality in Dar es Salaam region.

Speaking to invited dignitaries during the official launching of the annual Mayors Charity ball yesterday, the Mayor of Ilala, His Worship Jerry Silaa told invited guests that the “Dawati ni Elimu’ campaign which has a slogan “Kalisha mmoja, boresha Elimu” was launched earlier this year.

“In a humble attempt to solve the issue of desk shortages in primary and secondary schools in Ilala which currently lacks about 30,487 desks,”

“We seek to raise over 4, 98 billion Tanzanian Shillings which will be used towards the realization of this project by end of financial year 2013/14,” 

“Our target is to furnish about 105 Primary School and 49 secondary schools in Ilala. At the moment we have 28,018 and 27,737 desks respectively,’ he said.

Hon Jerry Silaa said that “Behind every successful nation, is an educated populace. In order to create a conducive learning environment for the children and future of the country, various tools are a necessity, one of them being a desk.
He added that this year’s annual Mayors Ball, focuses on desks in order to make sure that every student in Ilala Municipality do sit on desks.

Mayor Silaa further stated that statistics show that there is a need of about 86,242 desks in Ilala, and so far there are only 55,755 available and in use, therefore a deficit of 35.35 percent. This void can be filled if the public, private sector and individuals join forces to make a difference.

“I request individual, companies, parastatals, private organizations and the public at large to donate and sponsor this campaign wholeheartedly, in whatever capacity they can however big or small because it will take a collective effort to make this vision a reality” concluded mayor Silaa.

His worship the mayor commend the people who have already donated, he mentioned as Tsh 10m from Del Monte Construction, Tsh 15m from JP general Traders, Tsh 10m from Advent Contruction, Tsh 10m from CBA Bank, Tsh 15m from Green waste pro, Tsh 10m fromTirima Enterprises and Tsh 10m from NHC.

He further said that the ilala municipality carried out various projects such as “Clean and Green Campaign” with the aim to improve Ilala’s waste management through Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Silaa underscored that the waste management scheme has also yielded great results; so far they have improved the waste collection rate from 30 percent to 57 percent.
There have been various charity events that served as means of raising funds preceding the Mayors Ball, such as the Charity Walk, which was attended by the First Lady Mama Salma Kikwete and an art auction brunch that was held at Hyatt Regency.
