Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday decided to introduce English as second language in government schools from first class itself to make the students more competitive.
"After careful examination and keeping in view the importance of English at primary education level, the government has decided to introduce English as second language from 1st Class itself in Government schools in Andhra Pradesh from the Academic year 2011-2012," a government Order (GO) issued by the School Education Department said.
This will to increase the enrollment of students and impart academic knowledge to the young children and help in higher learning at later stage, it said.
At present, English as a subject is being implemented in the state from Class III onwards.
