Sentence day: Life or death, Kasab to stay at Arthur Rd.

After the sentence, Pakistani national, Ajmal Kasab, will become the first convict to be housed at the Arthur Road central prison.

Mumbai, May 6 -- Pakistani national and the lone surviving terrorist, Ajmal Kasab (22), who attacked the city on November 26, 2008, will become the first convict to be housed at the Arthur Road central prison.

The special court may sentence him to death today. At a recent anti-terrorism seminar held in Chembur, Police Commissioner D. Sivanandhan had said: "He [Kasab] will be staying in the same [place] as arrangements have been made to keep him safe there."

The prison, built by the British in 1925, has housed several freedom fighters before independence and is now used to lodge only under trials, as it is convenient to ferry them to different courts in the city.

Even the 100 people - including Dawood gang members whom the TADA court had convicted in 2008 for their involvement in the 1993 serial blasts - were shifted to other jails in the state after the verdict. The prison currently houses more than 2,800 under trials.
