Madonna Celebrates Gay Malawians' Release

Madonna has thanked fans for backing a campaign calling for the release of two jailed gay men in Malawi after the pair was freed at the weekend.
Earlier this month, the pop superstar branded the incarceration of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga "backward" after they were both sentenced to 14 years behind bars for being homosexual.
She urged Malawians and her followers across the world to protest the judge's decision by adding their names to a petition against the ruling.
After receiving the petition and meeting with United Nation ambassadors, Malawi's President Bingu wa Mutharika pardoned the pair and ordered their immediate release on Saturday.
And Madonna - who adopted two of her children, David and Mercy, from the country and is financing the construction of a girls' school in the capital - is delighted by the news.
In a post on her Raising Malawi website, she writes, "I have always believed love conquers all - yesterday I got to see it in action. In the last week over 30,000 of you added your name to mine calling for the release of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga - the Malawi couple sentenced to 14 years hard labor for the 'crime' of homosexuality. With incredible joy, I am writing to share with you that Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has ordered their release. Steven and Tiwonge were freed on Saturday night. They have won their freedom and you have been a part of it.
"We celebrate this astounding turn of events with Steven, Tiwonge, and the countless Malawians fighting for their release. It is a historic day for Malawi."

But the singer admits she is still concerned for the pair, adding: "Though they are free from prison, sadly their safety and future in Malawi is still unknown. I hope this is just the beginning of our work together.
"Human rights injustices continue for so many Malawians facing poverty, disease, and a lack of critical resources. There are still over two million orphans and vulnerable children who need to experience love's embrace. It is going to take the love and creativity of all of us to bring justice to the people of Malawi.

Lady Gaga left a north London studio after taping an interview wearing some peculiar looking shoes and carrying a studded leather Hermes Birkin Bag that would make Sid Vicious jealous.

However, I profusely lie about my personal relationships in an effort to protect that aesthetic and that message. Today people are distracted by unimportant things - like what my diet is, or who I'm f--king.
"I do sometimes feel that I'm on a stage all the time, and I do feel that life is a stage for my art - when I'm dancing, singing, making breakfast."
She also reveals that she cries when she gets off stage, saying, "There is a moment of freedom, when the stage disappears: when I cry. On stage, off stage, alone or with someone. The other surprise exclusions from Nigeria's World Cup party are Real Zaragoza striker Ikechukwu Uche and Nice defender Onyekachi Apam, who have both appeared not to have overcome knee injury problems.

Ikechukwu Uche was joint top scorer in the qualifiers with four goals but has been out of action for seven months following a major knee injury.

6-month baby girl married to 25-yr-old man in Pakistan to settle feud

Islamabad, May 31 (ANI): In order to resolve a feud brought about by the "kidnapping" and subsequent love marriage of a girl by a married man, a Jirga in Pakistan has decided that the man's six-month-old daughter should be married off to the girl's 25-year-old brother.

According to sources, Alamzeb, "abducted" the daughter of his neighbour, Naseer, from the Reri Goth area in Karachi two months ago, and that the two were actually in love with one another, reports the News.

But the family members of the eloped girl took the case as a matter of honour, and they started pressuring the family of the accused and also threatening them.

The sources said that Alamzeb, who has three children, hailed from the Hazara region, while the girl belonged to Charsadda in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The sources said that the wrangle between the two families led to holding of a Jirga comprising elders of the locality.

The Jirga, according to the sources, brokered a compromise between the two families and it was decided that the six-month-old daughter of Alamzeb should be married off to the brother of the girl, Haq Nawaz, 25, on the basis of Swara.

Swara is a child marriage custom in tribal areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

This custom is tied to blood feuds among different tribes and clans where the young girls are forcibly married to the members of different clans in order to resolve the feuds.

Ban Ki-moon ameuambia mkutano unaofanyika Uganda unaojadili kuhusu mahakama hiyo iliyopo Hague kwamba imepunguza uwezekano wa watu kuepuka adhabu na kuweka misingi mipya juu ya haki za waathiriwa.

Lakini ametoa wito wa nchi wanachama kushirikiana.

ICC ina kesi tano zinazoendelea, zote zikiwa kutoka barani Afrika. Mpaka sasa hakuna aliyepatikana na hatia ya madai ya kuhusika na uhalifu wa kivita.

Bw Ban aliwaambia viongozi, " Kwa wakati ule wachache wangeamini kwamba mahakama hii ingekuwa hapa ilipo, inafanya kazi vizuri, inafanya utafiti na kuendesha mashtaka ya uhalifu wa kivita na uhalifu dhidi ya binadamu.

"Katika karne hii mpya ya uwajibikaji, wale wanaofanya uhalifu mkubwa zaidi dhidi ya binadamu watashughulikiwa ipasavyo."

Bw Ban amesema wakati sasa umepita wa dunia kuchagua baina ya amani na haki- sasa mataifa yanatakiwa kukabiliana nayo bega kwa bega.

Lakini mwandishi wa BBC Karen Allen kwenye mji mkuu wa Uganda, Kampala, amesema hatua ya kutoa hati za kukamatwa dhidi ya viongozi waliopo madarakani, akiwemo Rais Omar al-Bashir wa Sudan kwa madai ya uhalifu wa kivita mjini Darfur, imezua wakosoaji wengine kusema mashtaka kama hayo yanakatisha tamaa harakati za kuleta amani katika eneo hilo.

Record temperatures in northern India have claimed hundreds of lives in what is believed to be the hottest summer in the country since records began in the late 1800s.

The death toll is expected to rise with experts forecasting temperatures approaching 50C (122F) in coming weeks. More than 100 people are reported to have died in the state of Gujarat where the mercury topped at 48.5C last week. At least 90 died in Maharashtra, 35 in Rajasthan and 34 in Bihar.

Hospitals in Gujarat have been receiving around 300 people a day suffering from food poisoning and heat stroke, ministers said. Officials admit the figures are only a fraction of the total as most of the casualties are found in remote rural villages.

Wildlife and livestock has also suffered with voluntary organisations in Gujarat reporting the deaths of bats and crows and dozens of peacocks reported dead at a forest reserve in Uttar Pradesh.

"Because of the heat, lakes and other water bodies have been reduced to parched land, making dehydration common in such birds," said Neeraj Srivastava, a wildlife campaigner.

Even India's northern hill stations – historically a refuge from the heat – have not escaped. Temperatures in Shimla, recorded a peak temperature of 32.4 Celsius, eight degrees hotter than the seasonal average.

After a drought last year, India's farmers are now impatient for the arrival of the monsoon, which irrigates 60% of India's fields. National meteorologists have forecast "normal" rains for this year, a relief in a country where prices of basic foodstuffs have rocketed in recent months due to growing shortages and structural problems with agriculture.

Forecasters have predicted that the south-west monsoon could arrive over the southern state of Kerala as early as today, but it is unlikely to reach the parched north before the end of June.

"It's too long to wait. We'll all go mad before," said Sanjoy Kumar, who sells dumplings from a stall in south Delhi.

The capital has sweltered under intense heat for weeks though, having endured temperatures of around 45C last week, dust storms and scattered rain brought some relief over the weekend. The new air-conditioned metro has seen record numbers of passengers as travellers abandon buses, taxis and auto rickshaws.

Parts of the city have suffered prolonged electricity blackouts and, in outlying suburbs, water shortages. In upmarket Mehrauli village, residents were forced to buy from private suppliers plying door to door with tankers. In the new town of Gurgaon, entire apartment blocks have run short. In the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, petrol pumps ran dry after railway wagons which normally carry fuel were switched to supply water.

The Indian Meterological Department attributes the record heat to lack of atmospheric humidity, hot dry winds blowing across the south-western Thar desert and the effects of last year's El Nino cycle.

Mean temperatures for both March and April were the highest in more than 100 years.

Columnists have wondered why, given that scorching temperatures in India are inevitable, the heat has become the centre of every conversation. For Jug Suraiya, a well-known writer, the answer lies in the concept of karma and rebirth.

"That's why we moan and bitch and bellyache," Suraiya explained in The Times of India newspaper. "Because by doing so we hope in our next incarnation, life will, in all senses of the term, be cool."

Anil finds rest in Mukesh's guest house

TirupatiL In promising signs of the growing warmth in relations between the Ambanis, Anil Ambani rested in the guest house owned by elder brother Mukeshs Reliance Industries (RIL) at Tirumala on his way to the Lord Venkateswara temple.

Anil, who trekked his way up the 10-km distance from Tirupati, spent some time at the Sri Krishna Guest House of RIL before heading to the temple for performing rituals. Anils wife, Tina, joined him after travelling to Tirumala by road.

Celine Dion Pregnant With Twins

Pop superstar Celine Dion is pregnant with twins after months of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments.
The My Heart Will Go On singer, 42, has been trying for a second child with her manager husband Rene Angelil to give their nine-year-old son, Rene-Charles, a sibling.
In February, Dion admitted she had been left "bruised and numb" after undergoing four failed attempts by doctors to implant embryos in her uterus, confessing she frequently bursts into tears over her pregnancy heartache.
But the couple now has a double reason to celebrate - Dion is expecting twins after her sixth IVF treatment proved to be a success.
Angelil confirms to People.com, "We're ecstatic. Celine is just hoping for a healthy pregnancy. She was hoping for one baby and the news that we are having two is a double blessing!"
Dion is 14 weeks into the pregnancy and is expected to find out the sex of the babies in June.
The happy news comes almost 10 months after Dion's representative announced the singer was expecting again - only for the star to lose the baby in November.

Hulk Hogan Has Back Surgery

Celebrity wrestler Hulk Hogan is recovering after undergoing back surgery this week.

The reality TV star underwent a four-hour operation on Wednesday to remove bone growths that had come loose from his spine, causing severe pain.

The surgery was successful and Hogan was released from hospital later that night, reports TMZ.com.

The sportsman previously underwent laser surgery on his spine last summer after collapsing during an episode of his daughter Brooke's U.S. reality TV show, Brooke Knows Best.
